From the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. HIV/AIDS among American Indians and Alaskan Natives--United States, 1981-1997.


A total of 641,086 cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) had been reported to the CDC through December 1997. 1,783 (0.3%) of the reported cases are identified as American Indian and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs). This report describes characteristics of AI/AN cases reported to CDC through 1997; summarizes trends in AIDS incidence among AI/ANs from 1986 to 1996; and compares the characteristics of AI/ANs who reported HIV infection (without AIDS) with those AI/ANs who had AIDS.
