At the turn of the 20th century, over one million Americans reporting American Indian or Alaska Native (AI/AN) heritage on the 2000 census lived in 34 urban areas which are currently served by Urban Indian Health Organizations (UIHO) funded in part by the U.S. Indian Health Service.
