A Shamanistic Performance Of The Coast Salish

The purpose of this ceremony is to regain the guardian-spirit of some person from the land of the dead. If the spirit is not regained, the individual will soon die. This particular shaman travels by canoe. Usually eight shamans are necessary to perform a ceremony that always takes place in midwinter and at night. Highlights of the ceremony are described, including capturing the guardian-spirit of a patient. Shamans are paid by the patient who also gives presents to spectators who help in singing.
