The Sacred Bundles Of The Pawnee.

Medicine bundles are integral parts of seasonal cérémonies and are kept by the leader or director of the people. One bundle contains a set of fire sticks that symbolize the renewal of life manifest every spring. Ears of corn, sacred pipes, an arrow-straightener made of antler, and scalps from the heads of enemies are also included in some bundles. An important sacred object, the skull bundle, presides over the planting of corn. The collection of sacred bundles of the Pawnee is in the Natural History Museum and is accompanied by manuscript accounts covering each detail of rituals for these bundles. Photos.
