It is impossible to determine in any objective fashion the extent to which peyote produces any of the cures which are attributed to it. But it is equally true that the line drawn by contemporary medicine between organic and functional ills is a wavering one and it is extremely difficult to specify exactly the organic basis of a particular pathological syndrome. Expectation of a cure on the parts both of the practitioner and the patient must certainly play a very large part in any efficient system of medicine.
