Medicine men practice individually, have no formal associations among themselves, have no connection with specific cérémonies and make no public shows of power of any kind. Pomos have two types of healers: the "singing doctor" and the "sucking" doctor. Each receives power from the Creator to perceive the nature of the disease and heal it. Nine case reports demonstrate the power of both types of healers. Diseases come "from outside" and "from inside." The former are the most frightening as they may be due to magic.
