Biliary surgery in the Southwestern American Indian.

Description:

Three year of biliary surgery at the US Public Health Service Indian Hospital were reviewed. Results in 249 operative procedures on 237 patients were compared with large series involving mainly Caucasian patients. Overall operative mortality was 1.6% - all deaths occurring after cholecystostomy. Earlier age of symptomatic presentation for surgery, an increased incidence of choledocholithiasis, and an increased incidence of gallbladder carcinoma give evidence of the advanced biliary disease seen in the Southwestern American Indian.
