Changing numbers, changing needs: American Indian demography and public health.
This volume, a selection of papers from a workshop on American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) demography and health, is an attempt to summarize the knowledge to date regarding AI/AN demography, their major health problems, and their utilization of healthcare. The four sections of the volume contain: (1) an examination of major demographic and epidemiological trends with a discussion of trends in fertility, mortality, morbidity, and migration; (2) an examination of the issues involved in identifying and studying the AI/AN populations; (3) an examination of the social and economic characteristics of these populations; and (4) an examination of healthcare issues, access, and utilization. This volume provides some of the reasons for the paucity of knowledge regarding these issues as well as current information about the demographic and health situation of the American Indian and Alaska Native populations. The volume may be found full-text online as a read-only, searchable file by chapter.
