Excavation of Indian Graves in Western Massachusetts

Description:

Excavations along the east bank of the Connecticut River were made in October and November 1904. One was near Smith College, the other near Amherst. Two fairly well preserved skeletons were found near Smith although some parts had been dislocated, possibly due to small animals, the action of water, or growth of roots. Nonetheless, it was clear that the body was buried with its arms and legs folded up, the hands around the head, and the knees close to the body. The 2nd skeleton was deeper in burial and the bones were smaller and more fragile, thus making it more difficult to analyze. Near Amherst, one skeleton found was that of a child, the other a double grave containing two adults lying side by side with their limbs entwined. Photos of these skeletons are included and are difficult to view, but a photo of an Indian skeleton found near Smith is somewhat better. Photos.
