A Hopi woman usually gives birth alone, but then summons a female relative to help her expel the placenta. Certain cultural procedures are prescribed for the next few hours/days, both for the new mother to follow and the child as well. These are described up to the 20th day postpartum when the namegiving ceremony is practiced. These are also described.
