A case of essential pentosuria in a North American Indian is reported. Pentosuria, one of Garrod’s original four inborn errors of metabolism, is usually believed to occur almost entirely among people of Jewish descent, whose antecedents can be traced to Eastern Europe. The only well authenticated cases of this disorder to be reported among individuals of other ethnic origin have been in four Lebanese families.
