Healing and religion are interwoven among Native Americans. The characteristics that make a powerful shaman are: 1) a recognition of the sanctity of human life; 2) a truthful man; 3) slow to anger; 4) deliberate and prudent in his speech. Without naming a particular tribe, the author describes a postnatal birth ceremony as an example of one function of a medicine man's duties.
