Burial Customs of the Hurons

Description:

Hurons buried their dead in ossuaries, single graves, and mounds. One ossuary contained human bones nearly ten feet deep. Prior to burial in an ossuary, scaffolding was used and every 8-10 years the bones were collected by bone pickers and put into the ossuary. Out of 30 ossuaries, only forty perfect crania were obtained, one of which had been broken in three separate places, yet the Indian lived for years afterward as the wounds were completely healed. Single graves and mounds rarely contained artifacts.
