Some Sacred Objects of the Navajo Rites

Description:

The Navajo healing ceremony known as the "Night Chant" uses, among other ritual objects, a woven basket as a drum. The drum stick is made from the leaves of the yucca. Other implements for the ceremony are gathered at sacred places in a ritualistic manner. Sacrificial cigarettes are made from the common reed and are carefully crafted. The ceremony, including the ritual aspects of it that include kethwawns, is described. Sketches. Photos.
