The Haida Of Queen Charlotte Islands.

Description:

Shamans were the only priests among the Haida. A shaman received his power from a supernatural being, although the calling was hereditary. Before a shaman died he revealed his secrets to his successors. Along with calling a shaman, healing required certain formal practices such as those to be conducted on arising in the morning, etc. Medicine was also available when a man was in love with a woman and its use followed cultural guidelines. Charms made of sheeted copper were popular. Simple extracts from plants were also used as medicines, but were believed to be less effective than charms. Puberty, marriage, and mortuary customs were strictly governed by tribal procedures. Good graphics.
