This is chapter 12 of the report and is entitled, "Disease and Its Treatment." Hygienic and physiologic laws are practically unknown, and even the contagious character of some diseases was not recognized. Herbs, roots, and bleeding were commonly employed in treating ailments. A list of plant medicines and their purposes is included. A ritual to be recited while the sweat lodge is being prepared for medicinal purposes is printed in the Omaha language and translated. Omahas believe in life after death and that, under certain conditions, the realm of the dead is accessible to the living. A funeral song is printed in scale. A funeral is described. Excerpts only.
