Excavations In An Erie Indian Village And Burial Site
Description:
Skeletons rested in one corner of the excavation and were arranged in flexed positions. There is evidence that artifacts such as clay pots, weapons, utensils, wood, barks, skins and fabrics of bark or reeds were placed in the graves near the heads of the deceased. Fires were built in the graves prior to placing the bodies there, perhaps to warm the bed or dry the damp earth. Two graves were found in ash pits. Arrow heads were found in several skeletons, indicating trauma. Excerpts only.
