A Physician Among The Indians

Description:

This is a 2 part article about conditions within an unnamed tribe, probably in the northwest. The author/physician arrives at a fort and is made responsible for treating soldiers, civilians, and Indians alike. Indians practice personal cleanliness, but not regarding their food preparations. Houses have been constructed, but Indians prefer to live and cook outdoors. Childbirth is attended by midwives who call upon the medicine man only when difficulty arises. Syphilis, pneumonia, and tuberculosis are the main ailments in this tribe, but fully one-tenth of all children are born with congenital hip dislocation.
