Description:

Navajos and Apaches are definitely connected by language, and some cérémonies show striking similarities. The office of Navajo shaman is not hereditary. Shamans are paid for their services by those in whose behalf the rites are held. Navajo cérémonies are divided into minor and major classes. Some are festive, some are similar to those of the Pueblos. The Night Chant is described and compared with a ceremony observed by Dr. Washington Matthews. Graphics. Footnotes.
