Turtle Shell Rattles And Other Implements From Indian Graves At Athens, Penn'A.

Description:

Several Indian graves in Bradford County, Pennsylvania were opened in April 1883. The object of this paper, prepared for the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society in November 1908, is to expand on the findings of perforated turtle shells, a bone comb, and a coiled copper ornament. The turtle shell ritual objects were found near the skulls in an excellent state of preservation. The bone comb had broken teeth and could not be measured. The copper coil could have been a bracelet. The rattles were probably owned by two men who made music for the dances. The bone comb was probably made in the first half of the 17th century was worn by women in dressing and adorning their hair. The copper coil was also an article of personal adornment.
