Ceremonial And Other Practices On The Human Body Among The Indians
Description:
John White, the artist who accompanied the colony of Sir Walter Raleigh, painted numerous pictures of the Indians in 1885. Consequently there is good pictorial evidence of the practices of the Chesapeake Indians and those living southward. Men and women adorned themselves with beads, cords, seeds, copper, and shells. Tattoos were common. Florida's Indians were tattooed all over their bodies. Catlin's collection of nearly 600 Indian portraits, painted in 1834-40 also conveys information regarding the customs of tribes.
