Disease Among The Aborigines Of America And Their Knowledge Of Treatment

Description:

Early natives practiced a variety of treatments for ailments and afflictions, may of which were acquired, according to the Jesuits, as a result of unsanitary conditions in their houses. A cure for scurvy was made from the branches of a tree called the "ameda." In 1535, some of French explorer Cartier's sailors were cured of scurvy by drinking a tea made from this tree's properties. Peruvian Indians practiced antemortem trephining, as seen from excavated skulls.
