Prehistoric Surgery In New Mexico

Description:

Two trephined skulls were unearthed from a refuse pile of a prehistoric Pueblo in New Mexico. Regarding the first skull, trephining was done probably because of a depressed fracture and a long established pathological condition. Death occurred immediately after the operation. The second trephined skull shows evidence of new bony growth but no evidence of injury. The patient survived the experience but probably died months later from an undetermined cause. Photos.
