The Tolerance Of Eskimos For Pemmican And For Starvation

Description:

Recent studies have shown that pemmican is not well tolerated. Tests on four adults who ate pemmican only for 6 days showed that a young man and his wife felt fine but showed a slight to moderate ketonuria on one or more days. An older man was unable to tolerate pemmican from the start. An older woman and two young adults fasted for 4 days after eating pemmican only for 6 days. All fasting subjects developed ketonuria which became very pronounced by the 4th day. This study of Eskimo health and metabolism conducted on Southampton Island by the Queen's U. Arctic Expedition during summer 1947.
