Ten principal causes of death in 1948 were: TB (21.1%), pneumonia (13.8%), diarrhea and enteritis (12.7%), accidents, non-motor vehicle (4.9%), premature births (3.1%), whooping cough (2.8%), syphilis (2.1%), motor vehicle accidents (1.8%), heart diseases (1.7%), cancer and other malignant tumors (1.5%).
