Endemic Goiter In Alaska

Description:

The inland Nunamiut Eskimos at Anaktuvuk Pass and the Athabaskan Indians at Arctic Village, Alaska, had abnormally high and rapid I 131 uptakes. They had low urinary eliminations, low salivary I 131 concentrations, and low plasma and protein bound I 131 levels after 24 hours. This was associated with a high incidence of thyroid enlargements and apparently low dietary iodine intakes. The findings are typical of endemic goiter. Map. Tables. Line graph. Bibliography.
