Burial Mounds in the Northern Sections of the United States

Description:

Ancient burial mounds are found in many places, particularly in the east and mid-west. Excavation of one revealed a vault comprised of oak logs over which mortar had been packed in layers, all covered with about a foot of soil. Skeletons inside were lying side by side, others were sitting or squatting, and in another mound the bones were heaped in a mass. Concluding remarks summarize the findings. Excerpts only. Good sketches of a section of a mound and plan of a vault.
